AQUATIC INVERTEBRATE SAMPLING EQUIPMENT:

STREAM DRIFT NETS:

The simplest kind of stream sampler is a drift net, similar to a ring net but lashed to a square frame. Stakes pass through eyes welded to the side and are pushed into the substrate. Organisms can be collected above and below the surface. Nets are constructed of 250 or 500 micron mesh and are 30 cm x 30 cm x 1 meter long.

WILDCO HESS SAMPLERS:

Similar to Surbers but suitable for gravel and cobble bottoms. Cylindrical with enclosed sides and an open top, it has two strong reversible handles for forcibly pushing and rotating the cylinder into stream bottoms. The sampler penetrates 3 - 6" (75 - 150 mm). Once in place, scrub the pebbles inside so the specimens are carried by the current into the net. Water flows in through the upstream window and out the downstream window into the collecting net and bucket.

This sturdy mesh net is ideal for student macro-invertebrate collection. Durable mesh net measures approximately 35″ x 45″. Three inch pockets on opposite sides hold poles in place. Poles not included.

WILDCO TURTOX® ZO™ NET:

Cut quite a swathe in open water with our versatile flat net. It is often referred to as a "kick net" since kicking the stream bed drives the "critters" into the net. Standard Methods suggests a net such as this may be used over cobbled stream beds to dislodge hidden fish. Use in a sweeping motion like a fish seine or as a large kick net downstream of aquatic weeds. Or as a big drift net to collect floating invertebrates - the choice is yours. Easy to control with weighted bottom and optional handles that slide into sleeves at either end. Drain small invertebrates into a bottle with Zo adapter.

"DYNAMIC" INVERTEBRATE SAMPLING NET:

This net is ideal for sampling invertebrates in streams and other aquatic environments. The bag is constructed of 350 micron mesh and it is securely lashed to a 12″ (30 cm) D-frame. The bag is 24″ (60 cm) in depth. Wooden handle is removable and can be ordered in any length up to 5 feet. Net comes standard with a 24″ wooden handle. Inquire for longer handles.
Add $2.00 per foot for handles longer than 2 feet.

WATERMARK TURTOX® BOTTOM AQUATIC KICK NET:

Net includes: 10″ x 18″ stainless steel rectangular frame; detachable, 60″ aluminum handle with stainless steel threaded attachment; and 10″ deep reinforced 500 micron Nitex nylon net. EPA approved for Rapid Bioassay Assessment Programs.

AQUATIC SAMPLING NET:

Designed for use by benthologists and entomologists needing a strong net for fresh water collecting of bottom dwelling organisms, or sweeping in thick vegetation. Heavy cotton/polyester bag with non-rotting thread is secured to 12″ wide D-rim by hog rings and has nylon mesh bottom 8″ below rim. Extended 4″ skirt protects mesh from snags and wear. Mesh Size: Available in 150 or 500 Microns. Smooth, lacquered, hardwood, handles are 5 feet (152cm) long , 1-1/8" (2.9cm) diameter, permanently attached with epoxy adhesive to a 5/16" (.81cm) cadmium plated steel net ring. Nets are 70" (178cm) overall.

WILDCO BOTTOM AQUATIC KICK NET:

Hardwood handle is detachable. Heavy muslin reinforces entire bottom of net, as well as ring edges of net to provide added strength. Net is attached with clips. Ring size, 18″ x 9″; net depth, 10″; net material mesh size, 500 micron or 800-900 micron. Two-piece handle is 60" L (total) x 1-1/4" dia″.

LAMOTTE D-NET with EXTENDABLE POLE:

Twelve-inch rim dip net is fitted with a heavy canvas bag approximately 6″ deep. Bag attached to metal frame with clamp rings. Bottom of bag is a mesh material of approximately 500 micron nylon. Canvas skirt extends three inches below bag bottom to protect mesh. Aluminum pole extends from 52″ to 84″. Replacement bags available.

If you are traveling long miles in the field, long handles may prove to be a burden. They may snag in trees and are just more difficult to lug around. For these reasons we now offer a net with a handle that is in three parts, 18 inches each, for a total length of 54 inches. Also include a handy carry tote in bright orange.

SURBER SAMPLER:

The Surber Sampler is a small easily portable stream bottom sampler. It consists of two folding brass frames, which are affixed at right angles and locked by braces. After the horizontal frame is "seated" in the substrate, the silt is stirred up and each large rock within the frame is upended so the current can wash the bottom organisms into the net.
Sewn in poly bottle at the end of the net for collecting the sample.
Custom mesh sizes are also available, but please allow a 6-8 weeks for manufacturing.

MINI-SURBER SAMPLER:

The Mini-Surber is designed for small streams and rivulets where the larger model will not fit, as well as for student use. The net is genuine 500 micron Nitex bolting cloth with taffeta wings. Sample numerous locations at once with your student volunteers and our low-cost unit. Net is 10 long, frame is 6″ x 6″ x 6″. Open base encloses area of 6″ x 6″ (0.25 square foot). Stainless steel frame for maximum corrosion resistance.

AQUATIC SUCTION SAMPLER:

Easily extract burrowing aquatic invertebrates from wet sand or loose muck using this durable sampler. Just place the end of the sampler over the hole left by the invertebrate or over any other area where you suspect specimens are located. Pull up on the sampler's handle. An area of negative pressure is formed in the void and the substrate as the inner piston moves up the sampler's housing, allowing the specimens to be securely drawn inside. Made of heavy duty PVC, hardwood, and rubber. Not recommended for use in clay-based mud. 42" long x 2-1/4" diameter.

WASH BUCKET FOR LITTORAL SAMPLES:

Made of extra heavy-duty plastic with molded pouring spout and heavy chromed handle. Bottom is stainless wire cloth (#30 mesh) reinforced with a stainless steel plate with 1/2" drainage holes. Sturdy stainless ring helps maintain circular shape. 12" dia. x 8" deep. Three-gallon (12-liter) capacity.

WASH BOTTLES:

These low-density polyethylene wash bottles have wide mouths for easy filling. Caps provide single drop or needle sharp stream. Available in three sizes. Bottles are durable, chemical-resistant, squeezable, and easy to clean.

Color coded wash bottles have color-coded caps, which provide quick, safe identification. Color-coded, wide-mouth bottles are ideal for the quick identification of the many solutions and reagents needed in your lab. One-piece colored cap and nozzle are polypropylene.
